Census!

Having recently completed the UK Census, we put a few questions to 70 Bright Sparks students who have been at the school for more than a year.

Here is an interesting glimpse into their lives:

Who else in your family can read and write?

Father – 10 kids

Hindu – 63 kids
Islam – 6 kids

What books do you have at home, apart from schoolbooks?

Hindi magazines – 25 kids

What do you like best about school?

Lessons – 20 kids

Playtime – 15 kids

What languages can you speak?

Hindi – 50 kids
Punjabi – 50 kids
English – 45 kids
Bhojpuri (regional language) – 50 kids
Awadhi (regional language) – 6 kids
(50 kids speak four of the above languages, to some degree)

What do you do when you get home from school?

Paid work – 10 kids
Housework/care of siblings – 20 kids

Thanks to the teachers at Bright Sparks for collecting the information, despite being in a lockdown. I wonder which answers interested you most? For one trustee, it was the fact that we have five aspiring choreographers at Bright Sparks, For another it was that the kids speak languages at home that most in the UK have never heard of!
